The ±10% Rule

Unless your instructor says otherwise, academic convention allows 10% above or below the stated word count. A “2,000-word essay” is safe between 1,800 and 2,200 words. Going far under usually signals thin analysis; going far over signals poor editing — both cost marks.

What Counts Toward the Word Limit?

  • Usually counted: body text, headings, quotations, and in-text citations like (Smith, 2024).
  • Usually excluded: the title page, reference list / bibliography, appendices, and footnotes — but always check your institution's rules.
  • Hyphenated words (“well-known”) count as one word in most counters, including this one and Microsoft Word.

Over the Limit? Cut in This Order

  • Filler phrases: “it is important to note that”, “in order to” → “to”.
  • Redundant qualifiers: “very unique”, “completely finished”.
  • Passive constructions — active voice is almost always shorter.
  • Repeated points: if two paragraphs make the same argument, merge them.

Do references count toward my essay word count?

In most universities the reference list is excluded, but in-text citations count. Confirm with your module handbook — conventions differ between institutions.

How strict are essay word limits really?

It depends on the grader, but ±10% is the common unwritten rule for course essays. Application essays are different — the Common App field physically stops accepting input at 650 words, so there is no grace margin at all.
