Frequently Asked Questions
How accurate is the word count?
WordCountly counts a word as any run of characters separated by spaces or line breaks — the same rule used by Microsoft Word and Google Docs, so the numbers match what your teacher, editor, or client will see. Hyphenated words count as one word, and numbers count as words.
Is my text stored or uploaded anywhere?
No. All counting happens locally in your browser — your text is never sent to our servers. The optional "Recently Measured" history is saved only in your own browser's local storage, and clearing your browser data removes it completely.
Is WordCountly free?
Yes — every tool on this site is completely free, with no sign-up, no word limits, and no premium tier. Exporting to TXT, PDF, or DOCX is free as well.
How is reading time calculated?
Reading time divides your word count by 225 words per minute, the average adult silent-reading speed. Speaking time uses 130 words per minute, a comfortable presentation pace. Both are rounded up to the nearest minute.
