The 7-Second Scan

Eye-tracking studies consistently show recruiters spend about 7 seconds on the first pass of a resume. Word count is a proxy for scannability: a 600-word, well-structured page surfaces your top achievements in that window; a 1,200-word wall buries them. Every line must earn its place against the job description.

Cutting Without Losing Impact

  • Achievements, not duties: “Cut deployment time 40%” beats “Responsible for managing deployment processes”.
  • Trim old roles hard. Jobs from 10+ years ago earn one or two lines, or just a title.
  • Delete “References available upon request” and objective statements — dead weight from another era.
  • Bullet points over paragraphs: 1–2 lines per bullet, 3–6 bullets per recent role.

Do ATS systems care about resume length?

ATS software parses any length, but the humans reading the shortlist do not. The risk with long resumes is not rejection by software — it is dilution: the more you include, the less your best material stands out.

Is a two-page resume ever acceptable?

Yes — with 5–15 years of relevant experience, two well-organized pages beat one crowded page. The one-page rule applies mainly to early-career candidates; past that, recruiters care about signal density, not page count.
